Honouring a Visionary, Preserving a Legacy

The George Johnston Museum is dedicated to sharing the history and culture of the Teslin Tlingit people, told through the extraordinary life and work of George Johnston—a photographer, entrepreneur and innovator.

George Johnston’s legacy provides a window into a rapidly changing era, from traditional Tlingit ways of life to the profound impact of the Alaska Highway’s construction. His photographs and personal stories document Teslin’s transformation. and capture the resilience, traditions and ingenuity of the Teslin Tlingit peoples.

Who Was George Johnston?

A true visionary, George Johnston was a self-taught photographer who captured images of the Teslin Tlingit peoples during a time of great change. He was also an entrepreneur and trader. Even before Teslin had roads, George bought a 1928 Chevrolet Model A. He got help from friends and family to cut out a 5-km ride, on which he would give people taxi rides!

Meet the Team

The Museum is supported by a small but mighty team of staff, board members and community partners. Each of us brings something different to the table—from front-desk storytelling to behind-the-scenes work caring for collections. We’re all here for the same reason: to preserve and share the history of the Teslin Tlingit people.

Tara — Manager
Tara keeps the big picture in focus while juggling daily operations, grant-writing, collections care and writing interpretive script. She brings years of experience and a deep love for Teslin’s history to the role.

Judy — Assistant Manager
Judy helps hold everything together, from team support to office work. She’s also a steady hand who is always ready to pitch in for the next project. Just look for the biggest smile around, and that’s Judy.

Mary — Interpreter
Mary is our youngest member. She brings a youthful perspective and a wicked sense of humour. This is Mary’s first year and we can easily picture her in the Museum Manager position in the future.

Lorraine — Interpreter
Lorraine has a love of history and reading. She is also a Librarian in Teslin. Lorraine is always happy to answer questions and share her perspective.
